Big Bra Amnesty - Moonlight Walk

A Moonlight Walk on the 5th June, with bra bunting and a big bra amnesty collection point from Woods of Morecambe, sees more than 600 ladies smiling all the way.

The 2010 Big Bra Amnesty – a joint campaign between Woods of Morecambe and St John's Hospice – came to an end on Saturday night marking the occasion with a bra collection point at the Moonlight Walk.

In support of the Lancaster based hospice, the Big Bra Amnesty campaign has helped raise money for the ward refurbishment fund for a second year.

Woods of Morecambe owner Nick Race, who will be donating 50p on behalf of every woman who has taken part in the Big Bra Amnesty, was also invited to say a few words and ‘cut the ribbon' - marking the start of the Moonlight Walk.

More than 600 ladies took part in the Moonlight Walk, with the first four arriving back from the nine mile walk in less than two hours, and the last lady just ahead of four hours.

Joanne English, shop manager at Woods of Morecambe says “We'd like to say thank you to everyone who took part in our Big Bra Amnesty. Although we've not had chance to count the bras yet the bags are pretty full and we're as certain as we can be that we've set a new record by topping our target to beat 1,000 bras. It's been a fantastic success, and good fun too!”

Julie Miller, events organiser for St John's Hospice says “The Moonlight Walk brought lots of support from so many people. The marshalls were great at keeping the ladies safe, the weather was fantastic, our sponsors VVV did a fabulous warm-up, there was an excellent atmosphere all round and ladies were still smiling at the end of their nine mile walk. It was a great night from start to finish.”

Colourful and fun BRA BUNTING decorated the St John's Hospice car park – which was also the place for the Moonlight Walk's start and finish and for the Woods of Morecambe BRA COLLECTION POINT.

A breakfast of pink wine and bacon rolls was served for everyone at the finish, and all walkers were given a medal and some wonderful pink bunny ears.

More than one thousand bras have been collected through the Big Bra Amnesty, that will now be distributed to underprivileged women around the world by the Preston based charity International Aid Trust.

This year the promenade-based lingerie shop Woods of Morecambe organised its second Big Bra Amnesty in support of the St John's Hospice ward refurbishment funds. Launched in March, the campaign has collected more than 1,000 bras.

The campaign closed on the night of the Moonlight Walk, when the Woods of Morecambe shop team manned a BRA COLLECTION POINT – to collect hundreds more bras on its final night of the 2010 Big Bra Amnesty campaign.

A Big Bra Amnesty label was sent to everyone who registered for the walk, and ladies were invited to return their labels to the collection point on the night of the walk – along with their bags of unwanted bras.

Woods of Morecambe is donating 50p towards the St John's Hospice funds for everyone who returned a label with a bra – or in most cases a bag full of bras!

The unwanted bras will become wanted again when they are passed on to underprivileged women around the world.

All monies raised at this annual MOONLIGHT WALK event go towards the refurbishment and modernisation of the St John's Hospice Ward in Lancaster.

This year's funds will contribute towards PHASE 3 of the much needed work – a family bedroom & ensuite bathroom being built besides the ward, allowing a patient's family the option of staying close by during the final stages of their loved ones life.

Beginning at midnight, the nine mile walk saw more than 600 all-female walkers took part. Partners, fathers and sons who wanted to be involved were invited to register as Marshalls for the route. Fancy dress was encouraged! A pink fizz breakfast awaited everyone once the walk was over – four ladies arrived back at HQ together in 1 hour 55 minutes as the fastest walkers, with some of the last ladies arriving back in 3 hours 45 minutes.
